An immigrant's
point of view
Among the immigrants, if
somebody is sick, or if he has any problem, then the rest of the members of the
family share the responsibilities and the pain of that particular problem. Now,
in this country, I have found that the English people, especially the young
generation, don't respect the older people any more. When I go and look around
the streets of this town, and when I see the hungry faces of the old people, I
have found that they are very much crazy only for small conversation with
people, because nobody talks to them. Nobody is ready to listen to them. Nobody
helps them. The same type of life, family life, which is existing among the immigrants,
was existing among the people ... –

CAN GIVING MONEY DIRECTLY TO POOR PEOPLE BE AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO HELP
THEM?
10
mai 2013 | by Alessandra Fontana
An interesting topic in the
blog section of the Harvard Business Review appeared in late March entitled,
’Want to help people? Give them money’.
This article opens a debate
regarding the question: “Can the direct transfer of money to poor people be an
effective way to get them out of poverty?”An interesting question that deserves
some thinking and analysis.
Jacqueline Fuller, leader
at Giving at Google, who posted the article, declares her initial scepticism
for the idea that giving money directly to poor people can be a good
solution. Nevertheless, she also admits to having been positively
impressed by the results produced by GiveDirectly. This non-profit bases its
activity exactly on the idea that providing unconditional cash transfers to the
impoverished is at least as effective as other programs are. GiveDirectly is
the first and only non-profit devoted to this. They guarantee that 90% of their
donations are provided directly to the poor avoiding all the costs that are normally
behind other organizations (planning programs, administration, etc). The goal
is not just to maximize the percentage of the amount donated which has an
impact, but to empower poor people, and not experts, to determine how to spend
the money. This, according to GiveDirectly, is also a matter of respect.
GiveDirectly assumes that
the individual concerned has a better idea on how to raise themselves out of
poverty. To validate and support this idea, they accurately track and monitor
their results that, until now, have been positive and led Google to
donate 2.4million dollars in order to scale up to other geographical areas and
test the method further.

What
is a coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a family of hundreds of viruses that can cause fever, respiratory problems, and sometimes
gastrointestinal symptoms too. The 2019
novel coronavirus, which is probably why you’re reading this right now, is
one of seven members of this family known to infect humans, and the third in the past three decades to jump
from animals to humans. A
pneumonia-like disease, the 2019
novel coronavirus has caused a global health emergency, sickened more than
31,000 people worldwide, and killed nearly 650 so far. Coronaviruses are
divided into four genera: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. Mostly, if you got a
coronavirus, you’d end up with a cold.
Coronaviruses are made up of one
strip of RNA, and that genetic
material is surrounded by a membrane studded with little spike proteins. (Under
a microscope, those proteins stick up in a ring around the top of the virus, giving it its name—“corona” is Latin for
“crown.”). When the virus gets
into the body, those spike
proteins attach to host cells,
and the virus injects that RNA
into the cell’s nucleus,
hijacking the replication
machinery there to make more
virus. Infection ensues. (wired.com/story/what-is-a-coronavirus -
